Nathalie Kyrou’s artwork in this exhibition is a reminder of the importance of the world’s most valuable substance: water. Spatal’eau - as the name suggests - brings attention to the serious issue of water (eau) wastage (spatalo in greek). Each piece of art has been designed with a focus on the theme of water and its importance to us, as well as what the effects of water shortage, exacerbated by its wastage, will have on our environment. This is something which cannot be stressed enough in this day and age when fresh water worldwide is becoming scarce.

Last year was one of the driest Cyprus has ever encountered – it is clear that this island cannot rely on rainfall alone to replenish its depleted water supplies and refill its reservoirs, which reached their lowest water levels ever at the end of 2008. With figures for precipitation frighteningly low, there is reason to be alarmed, especially since the latest report by the Environment Agency (EEA) on Europe’s changing climate predicts the desertification of Cyprus.

The future is bleak: this island will experience more frequent and longer-lasting droughts, and reduced groundwater, which will make quality drinking water hard to find. With the dryness comes a change in scenery too, something which affects Cyprus’ landscape in detrimental ways. Rivers and waterfalls, green fields and orchards of blossom trees; these are images that are starting to belong to the past, a distant memory of a natural Cyprus that is gradually disappearing. With more heat waves and changing weather conditions, even agriculture and tourism are in serious danger, something which affects the entire country’s economy. Better water management is one obvious solution to our water crisis, as are alternative means of water production like desalination, which are, however, costly. Dry taps and dried up fields have been our warning signs, so how can we ourselves now help? The answer is to stop wasting our precious water. To save water means to save Cyprus.

Inspired by Cyprus’s innate beauty, Nathalie’s paintings capture the splendour of nature, but also the change, caused by shortage of water, that is becoming apparent with each day that passes. With a diverse range of thought-provoking paintings, dominated by a plethora of natural colours, Nathalie manages to illustrate, in her own unique and artistic style, the devastation of the situation, whilst tempting you to dive right into her art and revel at how precious and amazing water, as a substance, is.

By bringing awareness to people about this significant issue, through a new, creative means, and by donating 15% from the sales of her work to Friends of the Earth – Cyprus (FoE-Cyprus is an independent, non-profit environmental NGO, part of the Friends of the Earth International network, as well as a member of the Federation of Ecological and Environmental Organizations of Cyprus), Nathalie hopes to be able to contribute in some way and make a difference. The key is to take notice of what is happening and be part of the solution, even in small ways. Every little bit, like every little drop, counts.

Η έκθεση αυτή της Νάταλυς Κύρου έχει σαν θέμα το πιο σημαντικό στοιχείο της ζωής, το νερό. Όπως υποδηλώνει και ο τίτλος της έκθεσης (Σπαταλ’eau), η καλλιτέχνης προσπαθεί να αφυπνίσει το κοινό στο κυρίαρχο θέμα της σπατάλης νερού. Κάθε πίνακας της Νάταλυς προκαλεί προβληματισμό καθώς η προσοχή επικεντρώνεται στην έλλειψη νερού, η οποία επιδεινώνεται με την σπατάλη και την επίδραση που αυτή έχει στο περιβάλλον.

Οι ανομβρίες στην Κύπρο είναι όλο και συχνότερες, χαρακτηριστική δε είναι η πρόσφατη μελέτη της Ευρωπαϊκή Υπηρεσίας Περιβάλλοντος (ΕΕΑ) που προβλέπει την σταδιακή ερημοποίηση της Κύπρου. Το μέλλον φαίνεται ζοφερό. Οι λειψυδρίες εξανεμίζουν τα αποθέματα νερού στο υπέδαφος με αποτέλεσμα να μειώνεται σταδιακά τόσο η ποσότητα όσο και η ποιότητα του διαθέσιμου νερού. Επακόλουθο είναι η ξηρασία και η καταστροφική αλλαγή του σκηνικού σε ύπαιθρο και πόλεις. Ποτάμια και καταρράκτες, πράσινα λιβάδια και ανθισμένα δέντρα θα αποτελούν εικόνες του παρελθόντος. Η φύση όπως την γνωρίζουμε, αλλά κυρίως όπως την γνώριζαν οι πρόγονοι μας, θα αποτελεί μακρινές αναμνήσεις. Η σταδιακή μείωση του πρασίνου και των δασών θα επιφέρει δυσοίωνες κλιματολογικές αλλαγές.

Εμπνευσμένη από τις φυσικές ομορφιές του νησιού, η ζωγραφική της Νάταλυς αντικατοπτρίζει το φυσικό μεγαλείο αλλά και τις συνέπειες από την έλλειψη νερού. Κάθε έργο εκφράζει με μοναδικό τρόπο τους φόβους και την αγωνία σχετικά με το πολυτιμότατο αγαθό, το νερό. Ο επισκέπτης θα εντυπωσιαστεί από τους ζωντανούς χρωματισμούς και ποικιλία των πινάκων.

Απάντηση στην επερχόμενη υδατική κρίση είναι η καλύτερη διαχείριση του νερού και κυρίως η αποφυγή κάθε σπατάλης. Εξοικονομώντας νερό βοηθούμε στην διάσωση του πλανήτη μας. Θέλοντας να ευαισθητοποιήσει το κοινό μέσω της έκθεσης αυτής και προσφέροντας το 15% των εισπράξεων στο κοινοφελές ίδρυμα: Φιλοí της Γης – Κύπρου (Οι ΦτΓ'ς Κύπρου εíναι μια ανεξάρτητη, μη κερδοσκοπική περιβαλλοντική οργάνωση, μέρος του Διεθνούς Δικτύου των Φίλων της Γης, καθώς και μέλος της Ομοσπονδίας Οικολογικών και Περιβαλλοντικών Οργανώσεων Κύπρου), η Νάταλυ ελπίζει να συμβάλει και αυτή κατά τι στην προσπάθεια εξοικονόμησης νερού... κάθε σταγόνα μετρά!
